Time Off For Good Behavior
Climbing and Caring
Torn between a craving for adventure and solving the world's ills? Priscilla Ma believes she's found the perfect balance.
As the founder of upstart, New York-based Prolific Adventures, she started her firm after fleeing Corporate America for 18 months to backpack through Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia and southern Africa. Returning to the U.S. with a newfound passion for travel and years of marketing experience, she set out to help people take "journeys for a cause."
While she's new to the charity/adventure travel industry, Ma has conducted extensive research in pairing up causes and locations and calculating the best way for money to be divided between causes and travel expenses. For instance, a trip to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro would include a $500 charitable donation to an association that ensures proper gear for the impoverished porters who guide climbers.
Participants also might select a jungle adventure trip in southern Thailand, where they would learn hiking, kayaking and jungle survival skills while part of their fee is donated to the International Child Art Foundation (ICAF). The donation to ICAF is used to create an art therapy program for children affected by last year's tsunami; on the last day of their trip, travelers can visit the charity and see how their money is being used.
"It's not really a volunteer vacation. It's a fun adventure trip for people, yet the price they pay includes a donation to a charity and at the beginning or end of the trip they actually visit the charity to see how it works firsthand," explains Ma.
